About Me
My name is Aassem Askari, and I am currently 30 years of age. I have completed a Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2011, and have most recently been working as a consultant for Kleinfelder, since March 2018. As a student, my electives covered wide variety of topics — as can be seen on my courses page — with a slight focus on robotics-related courses. At Kleinfelder, I've been supporting Enbridge's Leak Detection department with project drawing reviews, and technical document preparation. My background in working in diverse engineering projects as a project engineer lent strongly to this role, which has allowed me to find great successes thus far.
In my spare time, I like to partake in a number of different hobbies. Over the years, I have developed an appreciation of using my hands — starting with the picking up of an electric guitar when I was in high school. I have taught myself how to play the guitar through a combination of books, videos, and internet lessons. Since picking up that first guitar, I've expanded my musical abilities to include the electric bass, the classical guitar, and am currently teaching myself how to play piano as well. I had found that learning how to play music had given me a deeper appreciation of the effort required to produce the tunes we take for granted. Shortly after entering engineering school, I began to explore the world of hobby electronics. Part of this may have been influenced by the fact that I was surrounded by people who also liked to tinker, as well as the fact that I had an interest in robotics, and saw an opportunity to join the electrical team on an on-campus robotics group. This interest in electronics led me to purchase my first soldering iron, and a few kits to practice building some simple circuits. In order to combine my hobbies at this point, some of the first kits I purchased were guitar effect pedal kits — which allowed me to diversify the musical sounds I was able to create, while also learn about how analogue sound processing works. Most recently, I have recognized the artwork behind writing and calligraphy, and am taking some steps toward learning this art. With some basic tools (at the moment) and a few selections of ink, I have already began dabbling in fine writing, with ample opportunity to practice on birthday and holiday cards for friends and family.
In addition to my hobbies, I also enjoy sports with friends. I am currently part of a league ice hockey team, as well as a recreational ball hockey team. This is my second season as part of my ice hockey team, which is aiding my fitness and general hockey development, while also establishing myself as a core member of the team. Some of my previous sport activities include multiple instances of recreational league soccer, men's league indoor and outdoor soccer, and floor hockey, including four instances where I served as team captain (twice in outdoor soccer, once in indoor soccer, and once in floor hockey). Additionally, I have taken classes in break and ballroom dancing, and placed fourth in two beginner's ballroom dance competitions — Western dance (Waltz) and Latin dance (Cha-Cha) — held by the University of Alberta Dance Club.
